The hard part of distance education was never delivering the video. It was noticing which students had stopped watching.
Institutions across Oman and the UAE moved to remote teaching quickly, and many did it on tools designed for business meetings. Those tools distribute a lecture competently. What they do not do is tell a teacher who is falling behind.
In a physical classroom that information is ambient. A teacher sees who is lost, who has not submitted, who has stopped coming. Remove the room and every one of those signals has to be reconstructed deliberately, or it is simply gone.

Teaching remotely means running several systems at once: delivering live sessions, distributing material, collecting and marking work, recording attendance, reporting to parents and administrators, and keeping a defensible record of assessment. Institutions that assembled these from separate tools discovered the cost was not the licences but the joins — a student roster maintained in three places drifts out of agreement within a term, and every report then depends on which copy someone happened to open.

Live and self-paced serve different purposes
Synchronous sessions are expensive in the one resource everyone is short of — everybody's attention at the same hour — and they are worth that cost for discussion, questions and anything needing back-and-forth. Delivering content that could have been recorded is not worth it. Asynchronous material lets a student re-watch a difficult explanation, which is precisely what a struggling student needs and exactly what a live-only model denies them.
The practical design question is which parts of a course genuinely require everyone present. Institutions that answered it honestly ended up with fewer live hours and better attendance at the ones that remained.
Assessment is where remote teaching gets difficult
Every institution teaching remotely confronts the same problem: an examination sat at home cannot be invigilated the way one in a hall can. There are two broad responses, and they suit different situations.
Controlling the exam
Timed papers, randomised question order, question banks so no two students see an identical paper, and restricted navigation all raise the effort required to cheat. These are proportionate, well-understood measures that do not require surveillance of the student's home.
Changing the assessment
The alternative is to set work where looking things up is not cheating: applied problems, work submitted with reasoning shown, oral defence of a submission. This is more work to design and more work to mark, and it degrades far more gracefully — an assessment that survives an open book also survives a student with a chatbot, which is now the relevant question rather than a hypothetical one.
The signals that show disengagement early
Learning analytics has a modest, genuinely useful core. Attendance in live sessions, whether recordings are watched, submission timing, and whether work is submitted at all are simple measures, and a decline across several of them is a reliable early indicator that a student is disengaging — usually visible weeks before it shows in a grade.
The value is entirely in what happens next. A dashboard that identifies at-risk students and triggers no contact has changed nothing; the intervention is the product, and the analytics only decide who gets one. It is also worth being clear about the limits: these signals indicate that something is worth a conversation, not what is wrong. A student whose engagement collapsed may be ill, may have lost their internet connection, or may have taken a job. Only asking finds out.
Access, devices and Arabic
A platform is only as available as its least-connected student. In practice that means video that degrades to audio rather than failing, materials that can be downloaded and worked through offline, and interfaces that are usable on a shared phone rather than assuming a laptop per child. Arabic support has to be structural rather than cosmetic: right-to-left layout throughout, Arabic in assessment and feedback as well as in the interface chrome, and reports parents can read in the language they use. Bilingual instruction is the norm in the region, and a platform that treats Arabic as a translation layer over an English product shows it immediately.
How to evaluate a platform
Pilot with the teachers who are least comfortable with technology, because a system that works for them works for everyone. Test on the connections and devices your students actually have. Ask what happens to your data if you leave, and whether student records export in a usable form. Confirm where personal data on minors is stored and who can access it. And establish what integrates with your existing student information system, because re-keying enrolment is the cost that quietly consumes the time the platform was meant to save.
